Graduating Fellows Embark on their Careers as Nephrologists

UNC Kidney Center Nephrology fellows recently celebrated the completion of their subspecialty training. Graduates include Sara Burgardt, MD, Akhil Hedge, MD, Suzanne Katsanos, MD, Vivek Sanghani, MD, and Katie Westreich, MD. Here, the graduating fellows share where they're heading next.

Dr. Burgardt will be staying at the UNC Kidney Center and is practicing general nephrology.  Dr. Burgardt has an interest in patient safety and toxicology with particular interest in pharmacology as it relates to kidney disease.

Dr. Hegde is staying at the UNC Kidney Center, and is working at the Vascular Access Center. 

Dr. Katsanos is heading to Charlotte, NC to join Metrolina Nephrology. She will be practicing general nephrology in their Gastonia location. She is looking forward to being closer to family though will miss UNC very much.

Dr. Sanghani is also heading off to the "Queen City" of Charlotte, NC where he will be joining a private practice. He will be practicing general nephrology with interest in the workup and management of acute kidney injury.

Dr. Westreich will be joining the Pediatric Nephrology group at the UNC Kidney Center. She will be practicing general pediatric nephrology as well as focusing on quality improvement and patient safety within the Kidney Center and NC Childrens' Hospital.

The UNC Kidney Center welcomes new faculty Dr. Burgardt, Dr. Hegde, and Dr. Westreich, and wishes all fellows the best in their nephrology careers.
