Fernanda Payan Schober, MD is pleased to be joining the Nephrology Division at the UNC School of Medicine.

Dr. Schober is a long way from home as she grew up in El Paso, Texas. Living on the US-Mexico border made her acutely aware of income and healthcare disparities between the two countries. It also afforded her the opportunity to grow up in not only a bilingual household, but a bilingual city as well.

Dr. Schober left the region to study Political Science and Pre-Professional studies (Pre-Med) at the University of Notre Dame before returning back to Texas to receive her medical training at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Medicine. She has been living with her husband in Durham, NC for the last three years, and recently completed an Internal Medicine Residency at UNC Chapel Hill.

Dr. Schober and her husband enjoy watching sports, particularly football and basketball. Her husband is a graduate student at Duke in the Department of Political Science, so they live in a house divided during the basketball season. Fortunately, they always unite to cheer on the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame.
