The award will fund 10 weeks of research for Allred’s investigation of “Characterization of Two Novel Isoforms of Proteinase-3 (PR3).”

The American Society of Nephrology (ASN) and the ASN Foundation for Kidney Research have awarded UNC Medical Student Colby Allred a Student Scholar Grant.

The award will fund 10 weeks of research for Allred’s investigation of “Characterization of Two Novel Isoforms of Proteinase-3 (PR3).”

Allred is a first-year medical student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill who studied in the lab of UNC Kidney Center Director Dr. Ron Falk last summer.

Allred’s research focuses on Proteinase-3, which is a specific protein that plays an important role in the development of ANCA vasculitis.

This grant will fund Allred’s further investigation in this area starting in May.

Allred describes the research opportunity as “one of the best experiences I can imagine as a first-year medical student.”
