Women’s running relay team gave a gift in honor of nephrologist Dr. James Godwin.

When Dr. James Godwin, a nephrologist from Cary, NC, stopped to help a fallen runner during a race this past September, the runner’s relay team was full of appreciation for his act of kindness.

The 12-person all-women’s team, known as “Chasing Vermeer”, who had several members with connections to UNC, and had learned that the Cary nephrologist had completed his specialty training at UNC, decided to make a donation to the UNC Kidney Center in his honor.

The team’s gift was brought to the Kidney Center along with a letter from the runners expressing their gratitude for Dr. Godwin’s aid during the race.

The unexpected donation will help the Kidney Center’s Patient Emergent Need Fund, which provides financial assistance for kidney patients who are in great need.

This fund is one of the programs that will benefit from the upcoming Kidney Kare 5K Walk/Run on March 16. Registration fees, along with any fundraising and donations made for the event, will support the Patient Emergent Need Fund, Kidney Education Outreach Program and Carolina Kidney Kids for Pediatric Nephrology.

If you have considered making a donation, however small, to help kidney patients, you can do this by supporting the Kidney Kare 5K. Or, you can visit this link to make a gift to the UNC Kidney Center.
