Clara and Greg Neyhart created the Neyhart Scholarship in 2010 to support patients with kidney disease or children of patients with kidney disease. The fifth scholarship will be awarded in 2016. Applications for the 2016 scholarship currently are being accepted through May 1, 2016.

Clara and Greg believe that education often provides the means to reach goals and move forward out of life’s struggles.

Clara Neyhart is a nurse who has worked with the UNC Division of Nephrology & Hypertension, devoting her entire career to caring for patients with kidney disease. She has seen firsthand the struggles that kidney patients often encounter. Kidney disease can be a life-long challenge. The healthcare team provides physical and emotional support needed for healing. The patient, however, must have the courage to face altered dreams, work plans and relationships, in addition to the illness. New goals and future plans are essential to maintain hope and move forward.

Greg Neyhart is a college professor of chemistry. As a university instructor, he has been fortunate to support students in their quest for knowledge and to further their education. He also understands the obstacles students sometimes face.

In this spirit, Clara and Greg Neyhart establish this scholarship to encourage and support education for people with kidney disease. It is Clara and Greg’s hope that this scholarship will provide the first step for many people toward defining their future, in spite of, rather than because of their kidney disease.
