Abhijit V. Kshirsagar, MD MPH FASN, Covington Distinguished Professor of Medicine, Chief Medical Director of UNC Dialysis Care, and Medical Director of Carolina Dialysis in Siler City, represented the kidney world and the American Society of Nephrology (ASN) at the end of January, 2023. Dr. Kshirsagar spoke at the Virtual Value-based Payment Summit (January 23 – January 27, 2023) as a representative of the Quality Committee for the ASN. Conference speakers discussed a range of value-based care topics including the future of Accountable Care Organizations and Delivery, the Medicare Shared Savings Program, Quality Metrics, Primary Care Transformation, and leveraging large data. Dr. Kshirsagar spoke on a panel about Kidney Care Transformation. He discussed his experience in developing a local, value-based integrated care model, Carolina Advanced Kidney Care, a collaboration of UNC Nephrology/UNC Health/Renal Research Institute (now Fresenius) that ran from 2015 to 2019. He also discussed lessons learned from implementation of the recent CMMI kidney care models to inform the next iteration of these models. He emphasized that the next generation of kidney care programs, whether private or public, must have incentives to improve provider participation and patient health equity. Overall, Dr. Kshirsagar stated that the future of kidney care is bright as value-based care programs align incentives with treatments that patients highly prefer.
