The University of North Carolina (UNC) Division of Nephrology and the UNC Kidney Center offer a postdoctoral fellowship, the UNC Glomerulonephritis (GN) fellowship, focused on glomerular diseases and vasculitis.

This fellowship in glomerular disease is open to physicians having completed a general nephrology fellowship.
The fellowship may be one or two years depending on availability of funding.

Training Opportunities

Advanced training in clinical nephrology focused on the management of patients with glomerular diseases and systemic vasculitis

The GN Fellow actively participates in a busy weekly Glomerulonephritis and Vasculitis Clinic, in which fifty to seventy patients are seen weekly.

Faculty

Training in Clinical Research

The GN Fellow may participate ongoing clinical studies in vasculitis and glomerulonephritis at the UNC Kidney Center. The UNC Kidney Center is currently participating in several clinical studies in ANCA-associated vasculitis, lupus nephritis, IgA Nephropathy and focal segmental glomerulosclerosis.

Clinical trials span the spectrum from single center pilot studies to multicenter NIH, or FDA-sponsored randomized controlled trials. The UNC Kidney Center is also a member of large national collaborative consortia for the study of glomerular diseases, namely the NEPTUNE and CureGN studies. Clinical studies are typically conducted through the UNC Clinical and Translational Research Center, as well as within the Glomerulonephritis and Vasculitis Clinic.

Training in Epidemiology

The GN Fellow has access to extensive registries of patients with various glomerular diseases through the Glomerular Disease Collaborative Network (including ANCA-associated vasculitis, systemic lupus erythematosus, membranous nephropathy, and focal segmental glomerulosclerosis). These registries have allowed detailed epidemiologic analyses and retrospective analysis of therapy and outcomes. This research is conducted under the guidance of Dr. Falk, Dr. Susan L. Hogan, and other appropriate GN faculty.

Didactic Learning Opportunities

The GN Fellow participates in a number of didactic conferences.

  • Weekly:
    • Nephrology Grand Rounds
    • Nephrology Fellows Conference
    • Nephropathology Conference
    • Nephrology Journal Club
  • Annually:
    • The GN Fellow participates in the yearly, two-day meeting of the Glomerular Disease Collaborative Network in Chapel Hill

Applicaton Process

The Glomerular Disease Group at the UNC Kidney Center is committed to providing the GN Fellow a mentored learning opportunity in Glomerular Diseases in preparation for a career in academic medicine focused on glomerular disease. ‘
